Photoshop Forensics

New application JPeg Snoop 1.3 promises to be able to analyze open and attempt to decode any file that contains an embedded JPEG image, such as:

.JPG - JPEG Still Photo
.THM - Thumbnail for RAW Photo / Movie Files
.AVI* - AVI Movies
.DNG - Digital Negative RAW Photo
.CRW, .CR2, .NEF, .ORF, .PEF - RAW Photo
.MOV* - QuickTime Movies, QTVR (Virtual Reality / 360 Panoramic)
.PDF - Adobe PDF Documents

and lets the user know if the JPeg has been tampered with. It looks at quantization table matrix (chrominance and luminance), chroma subsampling, estimates JPEG Quality setting, JPEG resolution settings, Huffman tables, EXIF metadata, Makernotes, RGB histograms, and returns a classifiaction for th target image ranging from:

Class 1 - Image is processed/edited
Class 2 - Image has high probability of being processed/edited
Class 3 - Image has high probability of being original -- NOTE: Please see description below!
Class 4 - Uncertain if processed or original

Once JPEGsnoop has determined a match, it will list out several known editors that use this particular scale, as they are all candidates and can produce the same signature.

YouTube Mobilized

YouTube for Mobile's Download Now button links to m.youtube.com, where users can directly download You Tube for Mobile via your mobile browser. The cellphone app is simple, fast, and well-designed application for a variety of Windows Mobile and Symbian phones and supports both landscape and portrait views. Enabling search for videos through the search bar at the top of the screen, or through Top Rated, Most Viewed, or Most Recent categories. The results display in a horizontal ticker, which displays a thumbnail image from each video and shows the blurb and ratings below. The Menu options show a shortcut key to return to the Home page, and a shortcut to search for videos related to your current pick.

YouTube videos loaded quickly and play in landscape mode. Users control the Back button and controls to pause, skip, and adjust the volume; otherwise the video will play full screen. Playback quality varies by device and connection strength. YouTube's videos will chew through data, so having a monthly data subscription is strongly recommended before downloading the application. So long as that applies, any devout YouTube fan with find YouTube's mobile application an easy way to get a quick video fix - although the community aspect and saving favorites are presently missing from this mobile version.

New Laptop for only $20 announced in India

India announced a new Laptop initiative crushing the OLPC program's rock-bottom price of $100 per laptop.
R.P. Agrawal, secretary of secondary and higher education, said last week that the cost of the laptop was about $20 a unit, and that expected that to fall. He also said he expected the units to be commercially available in six months. My suspicion is that the laptop will actually be a Network Node - i.e. not have software embedded, and work in a local "cloud" suitable for Universities or IT networked schools.
